Owen Mor Care Centre
Understanding the person behind the need.
Set on the Culmore Road in Derry City, overlooking the River Foyle, Owen Mor is a specialist nursing home supporting adults with a wide range of needs, with particular experience in dementia, acquired brain injury, physical disability and more complex nursing care.
At Owen Mor, we know that a diagnosis never tells the whole story.
Understanding someone's personality, history, routines, abilities and relationships is just as important as understanding their clinical needs. It is this fuller picture that helps our team provide care that feels personal, reassuring and right for the individual.
Specialist care with understanding at its heart
Owen Mor has developed particular expertise in supporting people whose needs may be difficult to meet in a more traditional care setting.
This includes individuals living with advanced dementia or acquired brain injury, where changes in cognition, communication, mobility, judgement or behaviour can require a more specialist approach.
Our experienced nursing and care teams look beyond what is happening to understand why it may be happening.
By getting to know the individual, recognising potential triggers and creating familiar routines and trusting relationships, we aim to reduce distress and provide greater stability, security and comfort.
Where someone's needs require enhanced levels of care, additional supervision or individual support can form part of their personalised care plan.
Designed to feel familiar
For someone living with dementia or cognitive impairment, their surroundings can have a significant influence on how safe and comfortable they feel.
Owen Mor has therefore been thoughtfully designed to make everyday life easier to navigate.
Natural light, colour and contrast are used throughout the home, while familiar imagery from Derry and the surrounding counties creates points of recognition and reminiscence.
Our smaller individual units help create more familiar living environments, complemented by secure dementia-friendly gardens and sheltered outdoor spaces where residents can enjoy fresh air and time outside safely.
Single en-suite bedrooms provide residents with their own personal space, while lounges, dining areas and communal spaces offer plenty of opportunities for company when they want it.
A life beyond care
Specialist care may be an important part of life at Owen Mor. It shouldn't become someone's whole life.
Our activities team gets to know what each resident enjoys and looks for meaningful ways for them to remain involved, interested and connected.
Music, arts and crafts, social occasions, entertainment, reminiscence and time outdoors can all form part of life here. Our Coffee Doc provides a dedicated space for activities and gatherings, while our adapted transport helps wheelchair users enjoy outings beyond the home.
Sometimes the most meaningful moments are much simpler — a favourite song, a conversation, time in the garden or sharing a memory with someone who has taken the time to listen.
Working together
Families bring something to a person's care that no professional assessment can replace.
You know the stories, preferences, habits and little details accumulated over a lifetime.
Our team brings nursing experience, specialist knowledge and an understanding of complex care.
When appropriate, we also work alongside other healthcare professionals involved in a resident's care.
Bringing those perspectives together helps us understand the whole person and adapt their support as their circumstances change.
Could Owen Mor be the right home?
Choosing care can be particularly difficult when someone's needs are complex or changing.
You don't need to know exactly what type or level of care your relative requires before contacting us.
Tell us about the person, their circumstances and what has brought you to this point. Our team can talk through their needs with you and carefully consider whether Owen Mor can provide the right environment and support.
