Slieve Na Mon

Creating calm, comfort and stability.

Located just outside Omagh on the Gortin Road, Slieve Na Mon is a specialist nursing home for people living with dementia and complex mental health needs.

Some of the people who come to Slieve Na Mon require a level of understanding, structure and nursing support that can be difficult to provide in a more conventional care environment.

They may experience periods of distress, confusion or anxiety. Changes in their condition may affect how they understand their surroundings, communicate with others or respond to everyday situations.

At Slieve Na Mon, everything from the design of the home to the way our teams work has been carefully considered to help people feel safer, more comfortable and more settled.

When someone's needs become more complex

Dementia and mental health conditions can affect people in very different ways.

For some, those changes can become increasingly difficult to manage. A person may become distressed or anxious, their behaviour may change, or risks may develop that require closer nursing oversight and a more structured approach to everyday life.

Slieve Na Mon specialises in supporting people at this more complex stage of care.

Our nursing-led team provides continuous clinical oversight alongside consistent day-to-day support, allowing us to recognise changes and respond appropriately as a resident's needs evolve.

Predictable routines, familiar relationships and meaningful engagement can all help create a greater sense of security.

The aim is not simply to manage someone's condition.

It is to help the person experience greater calm, comfort and quality of life.

Designed differently for dementia

The environment at Slieve Na Mon is an important part of the care we provide.

Rather than a traditional multi-storey nursing home with long corridors, Slieve Na Mon has been designed around smaller, interconnected cottage-style areas, with accommodation at ground-floor level.

The home's dementia-friendly design has been extensively developed with specialist architectural input and reflects recognised principles around cognition, orientation, safety and emotional wellbeing.

Natural light, carefully considered colour and contrast, clear signage, reduced noise and familiar furnishings all help make the surroundings easier to understand and navigate.

Different areas feature images of familiar local places such as the Gortin Glens, Clogher Valley and Fermanagh Lakes, providing opportunities for recognition, conversation and reminiscence.

Slieve Na Mon's commitment to dementia-friendly design has also been recognised through the University of Stirling Gold Standard.

Space to feel at home

A specialist environment doesn't need to feel clinical.

Smaller living and dining areas help give Slieve Na Mon a more domestic feel, while residents have easy access to secure dementia-friendly gardens and sheltered outdoor spaces.

Around the home, there are also opportunities to enjoy familiar everyday activities.

Residents can spend time on arts and crafts, visit the hairdressing salon, enjoy afternoon tea, listen to music, use the library or simply find a comfortable place to sit and relax.

Our secure gardens provide opportunities to walk, explore and spend time outdoors within surroundings specifically considered for people living with dementia.

These familiar experiences can be particularly meaningful when other aspects of life have become less familiar.

Meaningful moments, every day

Living well with dementia isn't necessarily about filling every day with activities.

It is about finding the things that still bring someone pleasure, reassurance, connection or a sense of purpose.

Our team takes time to understand what those things are for each resident.

That could be music that brings back a memory, joining a social occasion, baking something familiar, spending time outdoors, attending a spiritual gathering or simply enjoying a quiet conversation with someone they know and trust.

Slieve Na Mon also encourages families to remain part of everyday life. For relatives living locally who may find travelling difficult, a complimentary lift service can help make regular visits more accessible.

Because even when someone's needs become more complex, familiar faces and relationships can remain enormously important.

Could Slieve Na Mon be the right home?

Families often contact us at a point when a relative's dementia or mental health needs have changed significantly and their existing care arrangement is becoming difficult to sustain.

You don't need to determine for yourself whether your relative requires specialist or enhanced nursing care.

Tell us about the person, what has changed and what difficulties they are experiencing. Our team can discuss their circumstances with you and carefully consider whether Slieve Na Mon can provide the level of nursing support and specialist environment they need.
